Semen Analysis
Are you and your partner struggling to get pregnant? Determining the cause of infertility is the first step toward starting your family.
A semen analysis can detect abnormalities that could be preventing you from conceiving.
Drs. Marc Kalan and Nurit Winkler can perform a semen analysis at their Bakersfield and Encino, CA, offices to identify abnormalities.

The Factors A Semen Analysis Considers
Volume
The volume of your ejaculate, or the amount of liquid released during ejaculation, will be reviewed. An adequate volume of semen is necessary to transfer sperm into the female reproductive tract.
Count
An analysis examines the quantity of sperm in the ejaculate fluid, or sperm concentration. Sperm count is measured by the number of sperm per millimeter of fluid. A low sperm count decreases your chances of sperm making it to the egg for fertilization.
Motility
Sperm motility refers to the percentage of sperm that move and how well those sperm propel themselves. Sperm need to be able to propel themselves through the female reproductive tract to reach the egg.
Morphology
Sperm morphology refers to the size and shape of the sperm's head. Once a healthy sperm reaches an egg, the head dissolves, which fertilizes that egg. A poor sperm morphology affects the sperm's ability to dissolve and fertilize.
Sperm Morphology Can Affect Male Fertility

Do I Need a Semen Analysis?
If you have been trying to become pregnant for over a year without success, or if a female partner is over the age of 35, both you and your partner should be tested for possible infertility problems. Semen analysis can quickly and effectively determine any male infertility issues. Further testing will be needed if the results come back normal.

Targeted Treatment After Receiving Your Results
Lifestyle Changes
Leading a healthy lifestyle with proper exercise and diet can help prevent issues like obesity, which can lead to semen and infertility problems.
Surgery
If you have a blockage, such as an obstruction in the vas deferens, our doctors may need to perform a surgical procedure to remove the obstruction.
Sperm Retrieval
In some cases, we may recommend retrieving sperm from the testes or the epididymis for use with in vitro fertilization or intrauterine insemination.
I've Had a Vasectomy Reversal How Will That Affect My Fertility?
/
A vasectomy reversal does not guarantee male fertility. It could take 3-6 months for your sperm count to reach normal levels after reversal. Pregnancy rates after a vasectomy reversal can range from 30-90%.
