Reciprocal IVF for Lesbian Couples

At Los Angeles Reproductive Center, we strive to provide all our patients with ample options to achieve parenthood. For our lesbian patients, reciprocal in vitro fertilization (IVF) allows both partners to play a critical role in the conception of their baby and pregnancy. Drs. Marc Kalan and Nurit Winkler are board-certified reproductive specialists in Los Angeles, CA, who are backed by years of experience. Our dedication to advanced treatment methods, paired with genuine compassion for our patients, allows us to provide leading fertility care.

Reciprocal IVF provides a unique way for each partner to contribute to their child's conception and birth.

What Is Reciprocal IVF?

Reciprocal IVF is a type of IVF treatment in which one partner acts as the egg source and the other as the carrier. During this process, the first partner will undergo egg retrieval. Those eggs will then be fertilized using donor sperm, and the selected embryo or embryos will be transferred into the uterus of the second partner.

Choosing a Sperm Donor

Since this process relies on sperm donation to fertilize the egg, many patients choose a donor through one of our trusted partner agencies. However, if you have a loved one who you would like to be your donor, that is also a viable option.

Is Reciprocal IVF Right for Me?

We often recommend reciprocal IVF for lesbian couples who wish to have both a genetic and physical connection to their child. It may also be an option for transgender men, prior to gender affirming surgery. If you choose this treatment, you can then conceive using the embryo created with your eggs and your partner or a gestational surrogate will be the carrier.

Our dedication to advanced treatment methods, paired with genuine compassion for our patients, allows us to provide leading fertility care.

It is important to understand that this procedure may not be an option for every patient. Your doctor will need to conduct extensive testing as well as review your medical history, among other factors, to determine if you and your partner are eligible. If we find it is not the right procedure for you we will remain committed to finding the right option for you.

Understanding the Benefits

The overarching benefit of reciprocal IVF is the ability for each partner to contribute to the conception and development of their baby. In addition, this treatment may also involve freezing the embryos. This offers you greater flexibility in timing when you would like to start your family.

Your Treatment with LARC

Undergoing this treatment at Los Angeles Reproductive Center offers several additional advantages, including:

  • Advanced technology
  • Board-certified reproductive specialists
  • Open and compassionate care

We understand the unique needs of our LGBTQ patients and approach treatment as a natural way for you and your partner to conceive, in contrast to our patients who suffer from infertility. Drs. Winkler and Kalan are dedicated to serving your best interests and we understand the substantial investment you are making, both financially and emotionally. Your doctor will only recommend this treatment if they believe it is the best option to build your family.
