Egg retrieval can be performed by Dr. Nurit Winkler and Dr. Marc Kalan at one of our Los Angeles, CA.

Collecting Mature Eggs
In vitro fertilization (IVF) refers to the process in which a woman’s eggs are combined with sperm in a laboratory environment. Obtaining those eggs requires an egg retrieval procedure to remove eggs from the follicles, which are fluid-filled structures in the ovaries. Each follicle contains a single egg. Egg retrieval is a simple procedure that can be performed when your eggs are mature enough for fertilization.
At Los Angeles Reproductive Center, we use intravenous (IV) sedation, administered by an experienced anesthesiologist to ensure your comfort and safety throughout the retrieval process.
When your eggs are close to being mature, your doctor will provide you with a time to perform a trigger injection to help your eggs finish maturing. It is important that you perform this injection at a specific time since your retrieval will take place about 35 and 1/2 hours afterward. This timing prevents your eggs from being released from the follicles before they can be retrieved.
Ensuring Your Comfort
At Los Angeles Reproductive Center, we use intravenous (IV) sedation, administered by an experienced anesthesiologist to ensure your comfort and safety throughout the retrieval process. A typical egg retrieval procedure only takes about 10 minutes.
During the retrieval, your doctor will use a long, thin needle to reach the ovaries through the vaginal wall and gently remove the eggs. Ultrasound imaging will allow your doctor to locate each follicle with precision. This ultrasound guided procedure is safe, efficient and effective in retrieving the most amount of eggs to improve the changes of success.
Recovery
When you wake up in the recovery room, you will likely feel the aftereffects of the anesthesia. You may feel sleepy or groggy, as well as a bit sore. Many patients experience minor cramps after an egg retrieval procedure which they manage with over-the-counter pain medication. You will need to remain under observation for about an hour so we can ensure the anesthesia has subsided.
Usually, we are able to tell you how many eggs were retrieved before you leave the office, however, we will not know the results of fertilization until the next day.
