An HSG Can Provide Clarity for Patients with Infertility

Are you struggling to become pregnant? If so, Drs. Nurit Winkler and Marc Kalan at Los Angeles Reproductive Center can administer a specialized X-ray known as a hysterosalpingogram, or HSG. This exam allows our double board-certified fertility specialists to examine the health of your uterus and fallopian tubes and detect any abnormalities that could be causing your infertility. Each of our four practice locations in Encino, Thousand Oaks, Bakersfield, and Los Angeles, CA, offers this fairly simple exam, which can reveal which treatment options might increase your chances of conceiving.

An HSG can often help determine the causes of infertility and the best means of helping patients grow their families.

What Is an HSG?

An HSG is an X-ray that helps our doctors examine your uterus and fallopian tubes to determine whether there are any abnormalities that are compromising your fertility.

During the exam, one of our doctors will insert a dye into the uterus via the cervix to observe how the dye moves throughout the reproductive organs. Dye that moves freely could indicate that there are no issues, while dye that is rerouted or becomes stuck might indicate issues such as:

  • Structural abnormalities
  • Blockages in the fallopian tubes
  • Excess scar tissue
  • Fibroids
  • Polyps

Our double board-certified doctors can use the results of your test to create a treatment plan that they can perform themselves from start to finish, providing support every step of the way.

What to Expect during the Test

Our compassionate team members will guide you through what to expect from start to finish:

Preparation

In preparation for your HSG, Dr. Winkler or Dr. Kalan will:

  • Schedule the exam early in your cycle to ensure that you are not pregnant
  • Ensure that you do not have any allergies that can counteract with the materials used in the exam

To ease any discomfort during the procedure, we recommend that you take over-the-counter pain medication and wear comfortable clothing.

Exam

An HSG takes about 45 minutes to complete.

To begin, one of our team members will inject a contrast dye into your uterus through the cervix using a special catheter. As the dye moves through your reproductive system, we will evaluate its progress.

Recovery

Most women can go home immediately following their exam. Because you may experience cramping or spotting after the test, you should plan to take it easy, but you should be able to return to your normal routine the next day.

Why Choose Our Practice?

Although this test can also be performed at your radiologist or obstetrician's office, visiting a fertility specialist is the best way to determine the cause of your infertility. Our double board-certified doctors can use the results of your test to create a treatment plan that they can perform themselves from start to finish, providing support every step of the way. For many women, completing an HSG can give them the answers they need. If the abnormalities that are causing infertility are treatable, an HSG can also give them newfound hope.
