Candidates for Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis

PGD is explicitly performed to mitigate the risk of passing down a genetic disorder or chromosomal abnormality to your child. Ideal candidates for PGD include:

How Is PGD Performed?
PGD is performed after embryos have been nurtured in an IVF laboratory. Typically on day five of fertilization, PGD is performed by removing a small number of cells from each embryo. Cells are carefully extracted by skilled technicians to avoid harming the embryo or making it unviable. Extracted cells are analyzed to determine the presence of specific genetic or chromosomal abnormalities.
How Does PGD Benefit IVF Patients?

PGD Success Rates
Currently, there is no collected data to track the overall success rate of IVF treatment with PGD. However, the National Library of Medicine published an analysis of IVF outcomes with PGD, focusing on 106,902 IVF cycles. Of the evaluated IVF cycles, 9,833 were performed with PGD. Based on the study’s findings, PGD was shown to increase the odds of live birth among women over the age of 37 and decrease the odds of miscarriage for women aged 35-37 when performed for aneuploidy (the occurrence of one or extra or missing chromosomes) screening.
